Nestled at the bottom of the Savoyard Tarentaise valley, at 1850 metres above sea level, the resort of Val d'Isère is a place to enjoy the natural wonders of the Hautes-Alpes, and the sport pleasures of the famous ski resort. From Val d'Isère, you can explore no less than three important natural parks, go skiing to the neighbouring resort of Tignes, or even cross the border to get a foot in Italy.
When should I come?
Although ski resorts, as the name suggests, are often popular during the cold season, from November to February, it is becoming increasingly fashionable to visit mountain resorts in the summer months. From March to September, you can enjoy a breathtaking natural environment, combining sunshine and coolness during the hottest weeks. Val d'Isère also offers a multitude of activities during the warmer months: from via ferrata to hang-gliding.
Good to know
Val d'Isère and Tignes belong to the four French resorts that offer summer skiing. There are even some vintage photos that promote this incredible new concept by showing skiers hitting the slopes in their swimwear. A must try experience!
How to get there?
By car: from the A43 highway exit at Albertville then take the N90 road to Moûtiers before taking the D902 towards Bourg St Maurice which will bring you to Val d'Isère.
By train: to reach Val d'Isère, you will need to go to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then take a taxi or one of the regular buses for the remaining 30 km. It will take you about 5.5 hours to reach Val d'Isère.
By plane: to come by plane, you can choose between Geneva airport (180 km), Lyon airport (230 km), Grenoble (200 km) or Chambéry (140 km). Then, you need to take a train or a bus to get here.
